21st Century Literacies

Demonstrate an understanding of 21st Century Literacies.

21st Century Literacies are complex; they range from personal preferences to academic competencies.  Students in the digital age have access to so much information, it is our role as teacher-librarians to steward the development of an accessible collection that considers the diversity and the necessities of our patrons.  Our students are our clients and our role as teacher-librarians is to curate and promote resources for multiple literacies that address the needs of our students.  The following examples demonstrate:

Support and promote textual literacy.

Description of Evidence: Invitation to join our Library Book Club on Wednesdays

Connection to Standards: The Teacher Librarian supports reading and print literacy.  Reading for joy and pleasure is the core of personal and academic literacy.  We want our students to enjoy reading and to enjoy their selections.

Description of Evidence:  Invitation and ppt. presentation for the beginning of our presentation welcoming Los Angeles Public Library and Los Angeles County Library, San Fernando Branch.  The objective of the presentation was to introduce the resources available to our students and families through LAPL and LA County Libraries.  Librarians from both branches were invited to present and the Library Night was hosted by the 7th Grade Team.  As 7th Grade level Chair, my role was to organize an event for parents.  The grade level team introduced themselves and the Librarians presented about the upcoming events and digital tools and platforms available to students.


Connection to standards: The development of a reading culture through a school year plan of print literacy displays and a celebration of reading through Literacy Night.


Library Night Agenda

Description of Evidence: The Battle of the Books list for the 2022-2023 school year was developed last summer to encourage students to read selections over the summer.  It was intended to motivate students to join the Battle of the Books Team and encourage students to begin reading for competition over the summer.

Connection to Standards: Promotion of reading is shown in multiple ways; events, clubs, reader's advisory lists to patrons

Respond to the diverse literacy needs of the school.

How to access videos from the digital library

Description of Evidence:   The following ppt. presentation is for our students utilizing the digital library and how they can access videos on databases for research.  It provides a pathway on how to log in to the Digital Library through the students' online learning management system and how to access the LAUSD Digital Library.  It prompts the students to log in to Gale Database and how to select the correct database according to topic.  We reviewed how to look at search results and how to select videos.  Advanced search options were reviewed with Topic Finder and other Digital Tools.

Connection to standards: Libraries serve a variety of patrons with a range of reading needs which includes reading, comprehension levels, language needs, and personal interests.  Development of a tange of resources that meet more than one need in the school community.  Promotion of reources that meet different literacy needs including both Digital Literacy and print.

Autism Awareness and Acceptance Week

Description of Evidence: Recommended list of title selections on Autism made by the Fulton Inclusion Team.  

Connection to the Standard: Working with the Inclusion Team, we decided to host an event in the library to bring awareness to Autism.  This included an art activity creating book markers and displaying new book preview on our titles that focus on Autism.  Our inclusion group has also recommended board books for students who specific tactile needs.  We work collaboratively to meet the various needs of the school.

Provide and promote resources to support multiple literacies

Description of Evidence: The Library promotes multiple literacies by promoting events at lunchtime for our students.  The promotion of events are resources are in a variety of formats; gaming clubs are offered for Minecraft and Legions of Learning (math & science games) as well as Lego Club, Board Game Club, and special events.

Connection to Standards: Teacher Librarians promote a variety of literacy practices including print, media, and information promoting multiple literacy practices.  Promotion of and instruction using a variety of formats including print, graphic novels, digital resources online, digital gaming and board games, and a writing center.
