Information Organization

Demonstrate an understanding of information organization.

The collection development plan included a full inventory; the two schools that I have worked at had full inventories completed.  Upcoming plans will include a collection analysis from various publishing companies utilizing their online platforms to see the age of the collection, genres and to support decision making on the new selections.  Weeding was completed at San Fernando Middle School and a weeding plan will be put in place for the upcoming library refresh at Fulton College Prep.  Allowing community input on the collection development in a principle to managing the collection of a school library because it supports student agency.  The collection development policies guide the decision making and are in line with district and state guidelines.  Policies consider ethical and legal protections and requirements.  Policies and survey links are posted for the community on our library website.  The following evidence includes:

WEEDING LIST

Description of evidence:  The weeding list contained many antiquated titles from the 20th-century  that were not circulating and had been on the shelves for decades.  Many titles were vintage age books, including reference materials from 1920 that would be better suited for an archive.  The weed list contains 1834 titles and an estimated 3/4 of the list was removed from the library.

Connection to standard:  The American Library Association has a Selection & Reconsideration Policy Toolkit for Public, School, & Academic Libraries and under the Basic Components of Selection Policy are recommendations on collection maintenance and weeding.   School libraries should develop policies for weeding, conducting routine inventories, and determine  the criteria around repairing and removing books from the collection.

Purchasing List

Description of Evidence: Book requests for Garfield Comics, Sponge Bob, and Big Nate selections were submitted by students.  These titles were purchased as an incentive to visit the library and check out these selections for students receiving services from our Special Education Department.  According to our Collection Development Policy, we consider Community Input on the Collection and these titles were not part of the collection for San Fernando Middle School at the time.

We also had a tremendous request for Manga and Anime .  Selections include Bleach, Full Metal Alchemist, Dragon Ball Z, Maximum Ride, and My Hero Academia.  Selections were widely circulated upon reopening.  Although the school was closed during the pandemic, purchase orders were being placed to develop the collection.  Input on preferred Manga and Anime selections were made in the fall of 2019 when we first reopened the school library at San Fernando Middle School.

Description of Evidence:  Coffee with the Principal on April 28th, 2023, there was an opportunity to present the survey on community input on the collection development.  Information on the survey was added on slide 17.  The survey is on our library website and the school website.  It will be added in both English and Spanish so it is accessible to parents.

Standard: Opportunity for community input into the collection

Collection Development Policy:  Based on LAUSD policies, criteria, standards, and procedures, Fulton College Prep Collection Development Policy is used to select titles for the collection.  We consider the needs of the student population when considering selections for the library and we collaborate with school community members, teachers, and staff to meet the needs of the school.  Our collection development policy drives the selection of new material into the collection and we consider the needs of the students, and the community as well as provide opportunities for ongoing input from students, staff, families, and the larger school community.

The Collection Development Survey has been shared with the community and is posted on the website:

COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT POLICY

FULTON COLLEGE PREP LIBRARY 2023

School Libraries are the backbone of the education of our citizens.  Literacy is the cornerstone of a democratic society, and libraries are the catalyst for the dissemination of information. Additionally, libraries are a depository of diversified ideas, concepts, perspectives, and points of view.  A complete library houses various bodies of research, literature, poetry, plays, musicals, and multiple perspectives from various cultures, as well as science, philosophies, psychology, and mathematics.

Fullerton College Prep Library continuously strives to update its collection to meet 21st-century standards. We accept donations that meet the criteria set forth in BUL-6222.2: Criteria For Acceptance of Library Book Donations. We are also soliciting community input through an online response form on the needs of the collection. The link for Book Recommendations will be distributed to staff and students electronically.

As the school Teacher Librarian, I am stewarding the development of the skills to access the library collection by teaching digital literacy skills, research skills, how to navigate the school catalog, and find books of interest in the book stacks.  It is my mission to assist teachers and support the students in actualizing their research projects.  I welcome all students to utilize and provide input into the development of the collection.
